Debasish Dutta
Debasish "Deba" Dutta is an American mechanical engineer and higher education administrator. He is currently senior advisor to the president of the University of Illinois System and, effective February 17, 2024, is serving as interim executive director of the Discovery Partners Institute.
Launched by the UI System in 2018, DPI is focused on making Chicago a global center for tech innovation and talent development for in-demand, new economy jobs. After Illinois Governor JB Pritzker launched the $500M Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) south of downtown Chicago, the University greenlighted a strategic transformation of DPI to seamlessly link it with IQMP. Together, they will drive economic development in Chicago by shaping the future of computing and digital transformation through AI, data science and quantum technologies.
Bringing to bear his years of experience in higher ed administration and transformation that began at Purdue University, Dutta is co-leading the transformation of DPI that includes, amongst other things, moving it administratively from the UI System to the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, acquisition of new facilities in Chicago downtown for its headquarters, and strengthening its partnerships with IQMP. As DPI emerges from the transformation in FY26, along with IQMP it will play a central role in building the tech innovation ecosystem and talent pipeline in Chicago and beyond.
Dutta has held various leadership positions, both at large public research universities and smaller regional institutions. He has served as Chancellor at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, at University of Michigan-Flint as Chancellor, as Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Diversity at Purdue University, and as Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate College at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Rutgers University—New Brunswick and Edward and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dutta is an Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
