Angra Mainyu

Angra Mainyu (; Avestan: 𐬀𐬒𐬭𐬀⸱ π¬¨π¬€π¬Œπ¬₯𐬌𐬌𐬎, romanized: AΕ‹ra Mainiiu) is the Avestan name of Zoroastrianism's hypostasis of the "destructive/evil spirit". Angra Mainyu functions in Zoroastrianism as the main adversary either of the Spenta Mainyu (the "holy/creative spirits/mentality"), or directly of Ahura Mazda, the highest Zoroastrian deity. The Middle Persian equivalent of the name, Ahriman (; Middle Persian: 𐭠𐭧𐭫𐭬𐭭𐭩, romanized: Ahreman), can appear in English-language works as Ahreman or as Ahrimanes.
